Arctium lappa L. commonly known as burdock, is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat infections such as sore throat, boils, rashes and various skin disorders. It has been widely used in Europe, North America, and Asia for hundreds of years.
Many compounds are isolated from Arctium lappa L. like Neoarctin B, Lappaol F, Arctiin, Arctigenin, Matairesinol and Daucosterol. Therein two main lignans, Arctiin (ARC) and Arctigenin (ARC-G) are known for their anti-inflammatory potency, anti-allergic, anticancer and anti-metastatic properties.
In the plant ARC-G is present mainly as glucoside (arctiin) and ARC-G is released during the digestive process.
